Look, I support the spirit of Occupy Wall Street. But the voices that I see spreading the message are really making it hard for me to take the movement seriously. Which is unfortunate because theoretically - our nation can’t afford to lose focus on this struggle for economic equality.
Unfortunately, its becoming more and more apparent that America only wants to talk about issues when it affects privileged white males. I don’t see images like this passed around on a daily basis when they happen in communities of color. When the LGBT community is attacked on a daily basis. When families are ripped apart because of xenophobic immigration laws and the militant way its enforced. War on drugs? The booming prison system?? People who are backing #OWS that make it seem like “ALL OF A SUDDEN THE POLICE ARE OUT OF CONTROL” - where were you when this has been happen in poor & marginalized communities since FOREVER.
I don’t even think most of America realizes that the communities that I come from even exist. People from my communities have been fighting to have their voices heard about police brutality and inequality and fucked up american authorities for decades… but we finally have a national discourse about this when it happens to nice little upper east siders.
I know i’m not saying anything that hasn’t already been said but… these are just my thoughts. America isn’t just a battle ground because all of a sudden bad things are happening to YOU. America is the same place its been since it began, only now people who don’t look like me are finally discontent in large enough numbers to get noticed.
